Blow-in insulation is a loose form of insulation that most commonly gets blown into wall cavities or roof spaces. Specialised equipment blows the loose-fill insulation via a hose directly into your wall cavity or roof space.
A Minimally Invasive Installation Process
The installation of blow-in insulation is by far the most effective and hassle-free process of retrofitting insulation into your wall cavity:
- Initial Assessment: To ensure a smooth installation process we always do an inspection first. During the inspection we will figure out whether the loose-fill insulation gets installed from the internal walls or the external walls. Most single-story houses will have suitable access from the outside, which is also our preferred and recommended approach, which minimises cost and avoids unnecessary handling of internal furniture.
- Preparing the Workspace: Once the team arrives on site, they make sure to move any obstacles away from the walls. The team will also block off wall cavity communication with the underfloor and ceiling so that the cavity enclosure is consistent.
- Drilling Holes: Most single-story houses have great access to the wall cavity from the outside. We use a thermal camera to determine the stud spacing and perfect location for drilling coin-sized holes through mortar gaps in brick walls or timber boards in weatherboard facades.
- Blowing Insulation into the Wall Cavity: Once the holes are drilled, specialised machinery allows us to blow the insulation straight into the wall cavity. A 360-degree nozzle is used to guarantee that all corners are reached.
- Thermal Camera Check: The use of thermal cameras helps us to verify a gap-free installation. This is how we can achieve high quality installation at every single job.
- Patching all Holes: All holes get patched with a suitable filler once the insulation installation is finished. The holes will be patched twice in a similar mortar colour for brick walls and a paintable timber filler for weatherboard walls.
- Tidying the Workspace: A good service includes a tidy-up at the end of every project. Our team will leave the space as it was or tidier!

Our partnership with Knauf Insulation allows us to use one of the best blow-in insulation materials available on the market. We exclusively use their Supafil® CarbonPlus loose-fill insulation for all our projects. This silicon treated insulation has extra moisture resistance, maximum thermal performance and maximum acoustic performance. It has also been tried and tested on over 5 million houses in the UK, and hundreds of our own projects here in Melbourne.

What R-Value is achieved in a weatherboard house?
In a 90mm weatherboard wall cavity an R-Value of 2.3+ will be achieved. With a standard wall cavity of 50mm for double brick and brick veneer walls we achieve an R-Value of 1.3+. Knauf Supafil insulation is installed at a density of 25kg/m3.
How do we access the cavity of a weatherboard?
We drill holes externally through the weatherboards. Approximately 2-4 holes per lineal meter. All holes will be filled after installation with an adequate waterproof wood filler. The holes will then be ready for sanding and painting (by customer).
Can it be used for internal walls?
Yes. As mentioned earlier the Knauf Supafil has not only great thermal but also acoustic values and can help to improve noise transmission inside the home.
Does it reduce noise entering a home?
Yes. Wall insulation effectively reduces noise transmission through external and internal walls.
How long does it take to install blow-in wall insulation?
